Balsam Pear - Papailla o balsamina (Momordica charianta L.)

This ground whole vine from the Amazon is used to treat diabetes, IBD, malaria, ulcers, uterine fibroids, rheumatism, high blood pressure, and alcoholism. It is an astringent and aphrodisiac. Balsam pear also protects liver and purifies the blood. Scientific studies report that balsamina also has activity against HIV.

For Tea: Boil 8 oz water, add 1 teaspoon of the herbs (you can use a tea ball, french press, or other way to strain herbs if you don't want it to be as "earthy"), steep 15 minutes, drink warm or cool. Sweeten as desired, I prefer honey.


Add to your hot coffee or tea, let sit 15 minutes, drink it up.
Start with one cup a day, increasing up to 3 cups a day if you want. The best results vary per person. You may need to drink it for a week or so to start seeing a noticeable difference.
For skin infections. In 2 liters of water add 2 tablespoons, boil for 3 minutes. Let stand, cool and sift. Apply on the infected area.

As Seasoning: Add to soups or stews to produce a bitter flavor.

For tincture :  Add half a cup)100 grams to 4 cups of preferred alcohol (vodka, rum, brandy) or vinegar. Let set 7 days or more. You can scale the recipe down, but be sure to use a container that you're filling up to the rim to prevent mold.

Take a sip 3 times a day until you are better. It's okay to add the tincture to a bit of juice to make it easier to drink. I suggest hold your breath and chug it and have a chaser ready.
